State level Puraskar Ceremony in Uttar Pradesh

Uttar Pradesh state level award ceremony was held on 21st March 2014 in collaboration with Uttar Pradesh Forest Department and Uttar Pradesh Forest Corporation. The event was meant to recognize and encourage efforts by schools to strengthen and promote environment education initiatives. The event was presided by Shri V. N. Garg, Principal Secretary Environment and Forests, Government of Uttar Pradesh and other panelists from the UP Forest Department, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, and PCCF Wildlife, Secretary Forest. Shri Garg appreciated the concept of recognizing schools, teachers, and students for their work in environment education. Around 500 participants attended the programme including 300 students and teachers from various districts, NGOs and district level officials. Through this ceremony, students from rural schools and urban schools got an opportunity to share experiences with the panel and amongst themselves. State Level Puraskar Ceremony in Tamil Nadu

The Tamil Nadu State level Puraskar event was also held on the 21st of March 2014. Dr. H. Malleshappa IFS, Director, Department of Environment presided the session. Mr. P. Kuppusamy, Joint Director, SSA and Mrs. Jessie Jeyakaran, member of Zoo Educators Network & Zoo Climate Change Network, South Asia gave their inspirational talk. Teachers and students representing schools from Salem, Coimbatore, Madurai, Dindigul, Trichirapalli and Kanya Kumari has been participated in the event. Other stakeholders present were officials from the Chief Education Offices, principals and NGO representatives. Watch the YouTube video of the event here.

 

Handprint actions of Chattisgarh state level nominations

School nominees for the puraskar at the state level have done work in almost all the themes focusing on connecting the themes to the immediate surrounding. Teachers reported having used field trips as a useful method of doing environment education. Mr. Sahu, teacher from Govt. Girls Senior Secondary School, Balod created a cultural heritage club at his school students visited heritage sites nearby and worked on devising conservation action plans in consultation of community nearby. Best student nominee Charumati Dhankar of the Govt. Model Higher Secondary School has worked on one such heritage structure conservation plan which included waste and park management at the site, inspection of the heritage building and gather information from experts, developing posters and booklets regarding the site. Speaking on her experience she says ‘I learnt the importance of these heritage structures. I learnt how to conduct research about these structures, to draw maps, and observe architectural designs. Now I have of interest in national heritage structures and like to communicate about them using different mediums.’ Read more about schools’ work here. ‘Create to Inspire’ Event on April 22nd at CEE Ahmedabad.

Inviting Ahmedabad schools to participate in exciting competitions planned around the theme of sustainability at the 'Create to Inspire’ Earth Day celebrations on 22nd April 2014 at CEE Ahmedabad. Students can participate in the painting and performance competitions and learn how to make a photostory on environmental issues at the workshop. There is also the first of its kind quiz for teachers on sustainability and climate change. The exhibition will showcase work done by the lead schools on E-waste in the city using art as a medium. The celebrations on the 22nd will be followed by a teacher's orientation workshop on 23rd April on project based learning. For more details click here.
