Recognising and encouraging school environmental action in Karnataka

Paryavaran Mitra State level Awards for Karnataka were given away on 6th May 2014. The Awards ceremony was presided over by Shri Vijay Bhatnagar, CEO, ArcelorMittal India and Shri Kartikeya Sarabhai, Director, Centre for Environment Education. Shri Bhatnagar responded “that when you go back to school, you always learn”. His remarks also included the importance of how entrepreneurship should be linked to learning of students. He urged students and schools to carry on the good work which they had initiated.

Amongst the awardees was Government High School, Beby from Mandya district, whose students walk half a kilometer to a pond nearby to the school to fetch water for watering over 200 plants that they have planted in their school .

Students from the Hejmadikodi, Government High School undertook door to door campaign to promote awareness among 100 residents near their school. Their action project emphasized on the use of energy efficient devices, on the need to switch off their electrical appliances for a little while every day and promoted the use of CFLs. Paryavaran Mitra Puraskar 2013- Madhya Pradesh State Level Event

Paryavaran Mitra Puraskar 2013- Madhya Pradesh State Level Event was held in partnership with Regional Museum of Natural History ( RMNH) Bhopal and Tri-NATURE organization , Bhopal ,on 29th April 2014 at RMNH . Just 6 days to go, and time to select your favorite local tree saplings and to get ready for 22 May 2014 (International Biological Diversity Day). Over 4000 women from Tamil Nadu Local Women’s Self Help groups have registered to participate in the plantation activity by conserving the local trees species of Tamil Nadu. Committee shortlists nominations for Paryavaran Mitra Puraskar 2013

The nominations from the states for the Best School, Best Teacher and Best Student categories have been shortlisted for a national jury on the basis of the criteria for the awards. These shortlisted entries will be further scrutinized by the national jury which will nominate the Best Schools, Teachers and Students. The highlights of the shortlisted schools were involvement of almost all students in the class in the action projects, delegation of roles to students and sharing of results, outreach as well as involvement of the community in some instances, achieving environmental and educational outcomes through action projects, linkages to the curriculum, etc. Names of shortlisted nominations are listed here.
