History of Earth Day

The first Earth Day was celebrated on 22nd April, 1970. It was the brain child of Gaylord Nelson, the then US Senator for Wisconsin.
There was strong anti – war student movement in force in the country. Trying to build a similar kind of common sentiment against rapid environmental degradation, Senator Nelson announced a nation wide grassroots demonstration in September 1969. T

he movement gathered momentum then onwards and Denis Hayes was appointed as the coordinator of Earth Day. Events were promoted across America. As a result on 22nd April 1970, 20 million people of the country along with schools and communities demonstrated for the environment. Now, more than one billion people across the globe celebrate the day.
